Integral Somatic Psychology

Integral Somatic Psychology (ISP) - founded by Dr. Raja Selvam (Senior Somatic Experiencing teacher) - is a way of building emotional capacity. This is accomplished by expanding the emotion to as much of the body as possible in order to make it more tolerable. When emotions become more tolerable we can properly digest them and our cognition and behavior around difficult emotional situations improves.

Expansion of the emotion through more of the body is accomplished by simple tools of self-touch, awareness, breath, and movement that can also be used outside of session on one’s own.

I have finished training in this method and am working towards certification.

Racialized Trauma

In 2022 I took Resmaa Menakam’s Foundations in Somatic Abolitionism course. In addition to other learnings around race both personally as an Indian-American and also professionally through graduate school and various school and community based internships I can provide support around the very real experiences of racialized trauma so many experience.

Hakomi

Hakomi is a mindbody psychotherapy that emphasizes creating safety between practitioner and client so that the client’s unconscious can begin to surface in session. This can lead to inner child work, the accessing of core beliefs and memories, and more.

Hakomi requires the ability to use mindfulness to be aware of one’s thoughts, feelings, and body sensations.

I did the Hakomi Comprehensive training from 2015-2016 and also had weekly supervision with a Hakomi certified practitioner from June 2021 to August 2022.

Ray Castellino Birth Trauma Work

I had the fortune of studying with Ray Castellino directly from 2016 to 2018 as part of his foundations training. The main way I encorporate his work into my practice is through using the principles he taught which are as follows:

welcoming, self-care, touch and attention, brief frequent eye contact, choice, mutual support and cooperation, the pause, and confidentiality

Mindbody therapy work for chronic pain/illness

My therapy journey was initiated in college when I had a repetitive stress injury (RSI) problem that just would not go away despite everything I tried - both mainstream and alternative. I stumbled across the mindbody medicine or TMS theory of Dr. John Sarno which suggested that while the physical symptoms I was experiencing were very much real the root cause was due to my nervous system being overwhelmed with the possibility of difficult emotions arising. Using his approach I cured myself of my RSI within a few weeks.

If you are suffering from an unexplained medical issue or chronic pain syndrome that has not been resolved by western medicine I can work with you to see if this approach can help. The good news is it likely can!

In addition to the above modalities, I have also taken the Somatica training in 2018 and have been a student of the Diamond Approach from 2011 to 2022, both of which inform my practice.
