We often limits ourselves in our lives. We avoid difficult conversations that could increase intimacy and connection. We don’t speak out for what we want for fear of rejection. This can lead to isolation, dissatisfaction, and a sense of not feeling fulfilled. Therapy can help us build the capacity to be with the difficult feelings that often hold us back from living the life we truly want.

A lot of therapy modalities focus on regulating the nervous system - in particular downregulating - which means lowering the amount of activation or charge we might feel. This is important and valuable. If you’re really anxious and can’t think straight you want to have tools to be able to downregulate and deal with whatever situation has arisen. I teach these skills to my clients.

However, focusing only on downregulation is often incomplete and sometimes does not improve our capacity to be with difficult feelings. In our work in addition to downregulating techniques we will also work on building the capacity to be with all the feelings, including feelings like shame and hatred which often get neglected.
